Item Description
Up for sale is a beautiful, rare European-market 1958 Höfner Model 4550/S. Originally purchased in Sweden, this instrument features a large 17" lower bout and is distinctly constructed with a stunning flamed maple laminate top, back, and sides. This all-maple configuration creates a brilliant, punchy acoustic response that perfectly drives a traditional swing rhythm ensemble.
Inside the upper F-hole, the raw underside of the top features the original luthier’s penciled assembly date: 8.5.58 (May 8, 1958), offering absolute historical certainty for the collector.
Electronics & Repairs:
The original potentiometer was dead and has been completely overhauled. The electronic work was meticulously executed by a professional electronics guy with an engineering degree. They installed a premium 500k linear CTS pot utilizing period-correct cloth-braided pushback wire to maintain the guitar's vintage structural integrity. Crucially, the rare, proprietary Höfner 2501f output assembly remains completely original and untouched. To ensure you can play it right out of the box, the sale includes a brand-new, high-fidelity custom cable explicitly made for this vintage format by The Tube Amp Doctor (TAD) in Germany. The floating "Ideal" pickup sounds fantastic, yielding a warm, woody jazz voice with excellent clarity.
What’s Included:
Vintage 1958 Höfner 4550/S Archtop Guitar
Snug-fitting Gear4music Hard Case (Provides excellent protection and a perfect fit for this large 17" body format).
Premium Tube Amp Doctor (TAD) Audio Cable (Brand new, replica cable sourced from Germany to perfectly match the original 2501f output jack block).
All original parts and vintage guitar strap that came with it.
Condition Notes (Please Read):
The guitar is in overall original, good vintage condition. It plays great as-is and holds its tune beautifully. However, please note the following points:
Neck Hairline: There is a hairline crack present in the neck wood. It is currently stable under string tension, and the guitar holds its pitch remarkably well, but it is there and visible.
Setup Status: This instrument has not been set up by a professional guitar luthier. The action is currently playable, but it has not been optimized for peak personal performance. It is being sold as-found, allowing the next owner to adjust the neck, bridge height, and action exactly to their individual playing preference.
This is an incredibly honest, deeply resonant piece of German post-war luthiery with a verified history. Please review all photos carefully and ask any questions before buying!
