The Sitter: The painting depicts Sue Tilley (often nicknamed "Big Sue"), who actually worked as a benefits supervisor at a London job centre.
The Subject Matter: It features Tilley lying naked and asleep on a worn, patterned sofa. At the time, she weighed roughly 127 kilograms (280 lbs).
Artistic Style: True to Freud's signature style, the painting rejects traditional, idealized concepts of beauty. It utilizes heavy, textured brushstrokes to capture the literal "fleshy rawness" and vulnerability of the human body.
