We live in a wooded land by the sea. Here, through the past millennia we have become Estonians. Though the woods are disappearing, the sea is still there. Without the sea we would not be these people who we are. Estonia - a patch of land, 45,000 square kilometres in all - is washed by the sea in three sides. About 3,800 kilometres of coast break the waves of the Baltic Sea still the sea influences the whole country and reaches to all its people in one way or another. The sea that can give and take is with the Estonians in their work and art. The sea is the embodiment of the Estonians' respect and fears, their distress and joy, love and longing.... "All people were born at the blue sea," the Estonian writer Jaan Kross says. The sea has a deep meaning to the Estonian; he may grasp it only when he is removed from the sea and taken beyond the high mountains. Beautiful colour photographs throughout the book.
