Offered is a premier example of 19th-century Ottoman craftsmanship: a pair of (Calligrapher’s Scissors). These were the essential instruments of the master scribe, used to prune paper with surgical precision. Unlike household scissors, these are a testament to the intersection of utility and Islamic art.
Key Technical & Artistic Features:
Gold Damascened Steel: The shanks and finger bows feature intricate, hand-applied gold inlay (Tula work) in traditional Ottoman floral and geometric motifs. The gold retains excellent luster and coverage.
Master’s Stamp (Damga): The pivot area bears a circular workshop mark, identifying this piece as the work of a professional guild-affiliated cutler.
Hand-Forged Assembly Marks: The interior of the blades features four hand-incised vertical tally lines. These are authentic workshop marks used during the forging process to ensure the perfect pairing of these specific hand-ground blades.
Hollow-Ground Blades: The blades are expertly hollow-ground (concave) to reduce surface friction—a mandatory feature for the clean, snag-free cutting of delicate, sized calligraphy paper (Aharli).
