Here we have a used Fender Japan MG-65 VSP Mustang (CBL)
“VSP” stands for Vintage Special Project - the designation given to Fender Japan’s highest level instruments. These guitars represent Fender Japan’s premium vintage correct and most expensive offerings in their catalogue, made between 2007–2012.
This is the VSP version of the Fender Japan MG-65 Mustang, in the rarest of the line California Blue (CBL) - not be mistaken for Daphne Blue.
VSP Specs: Nitrocellulose (nitro) Lacquer Finish - Poplar body wood (same as original early/mid 60's Mustangs had) - Specially selected necks - CTS potentiometers, Switchcraft slider switches and Jack, cloth wire throughout - Schaller “F key” tuners.
Mods/Upgrades: There have been some modifications to this guitar,
- Pickups replaced with the Mojo Pickups (UK) Mustang set - A slightly tweaked version of the classic 60’s Mustang pickups with a slightly overwound bridge pickup. Handwound with vintage accurate Plain Enamal wire 42awg wire and with non-staggered custom vintage cloned alnico 5 magnets.
- Custom spacers installed under pickup switches - so they sit lower and you are less likely to catch your hand or pick on them
- Have moved a wire on a switch, to give 2 additional pickup combinations (both pickups in Series, In Phase and Out of Phase). All original positions are still there.
Middle position on both switches = Pickup ON, Back on both switches = Pickup OFF. When Both Pickups are ON, moving Rear switch to Forward position changes it from both pickups ON In Parallel, to both pickups ON In Series. When Both Pickups are ON, moving Front switch to Forward position changes it from both pickups ON In Phase, to both pickups ON Out of Phase.
Condition: As this is Nitro finished, it ages a little more easily, there are a few scratches/swirls and the odd chip - but it's doing pretty well. There is a chip on the neck fretboard edge and a ding on the lower horn. The fretboard chip could be repaired quite easily but never bothered me enough, you don't notice it while playing.
Has had some wood removed (and painted black) under the bridge plate, as a Faction hard tail plate was installed at some point.
