This is a rare, beautifully preserved set of 8 handmade Japanese chisels (oire-nomi) forged by Ouchi-san in Miki City, Japan. The set is notable for being pre-1995 production—confirmed by the original stickers on the handles—placing them at over 30 years old and likely forged by Ouchi-san’s father, as the smith himself explained to me. Sets of this vintage are increasingly difficult to find.
These are Hira-machi oire-nomi, a special flat-neck design that allows for flush paring cuts without the interference of the rounded neck common in standard oire-nomi. Slimmer in profile, they excel in fine furniture making, while still retaining the necessary strength for everyday chiselling tasks.
Each chisel is forged with #2 White Steel (Shirogami #2) laminated to soft steel for superb sharpness and sharpening ease. Handles are made from Japanese white oak.

The entire set was returned to the maker for full restoration:

Edge cutting, grinding & re-hollowing for:
6, 9, 18, 36 mm
Re-hollowing for:
3, 12, 15 mm
Blade polishing
Black finish applied, including black hollows
Hoops not installed (as received)
Used less than 1 hour since restoration
The set is in excellent, ready-to-use condition.
