This is a German commemorative ceramic plate from World War I (Kriegskeramik). It is a historical collector's item with a rich history behind it. [1, 2]
Historical Background
• Manufacturer: Produced by the renowned German ceramic manufactory Waechtersbach (Wächtersbacher Steingutfabrik) in Hesse, Germany. The stamp on the back confirms this, alongside the registered pattern number (Dek. 2520) and the standard German marking "gesetzlich geschützt" (protected by law). [1, 2]
• The Text: The Fraktur script reads: "Besser 'K.' Brot als 'kaa' Brot!" written in a local Hessian dialect. It translates to "Better 'K' Bread than 'no' Bread!". [1]
• The Meaning of 'K' Bread: Dating to 1914/16, this plate reflects the food scarcity during the early years of WWI. Due to grain shortages, the German government mandated that bread be stretched using potato flour or potato flakes. This potato-rye wartime staple was officially known as K-Brot (Kriegsbrot or war bread). [1, 2, 3]
• The Illustration: Designed by artist Johann Georg Mohr, it depicts a traditional girl from the Schwalm region (Schwälmerin) holding two large loaves of bread. If you look very closely at the loaves she is carrying, the artist cleverly integrated the markings "K 15" on one loaf and "k 19" on the other
