Amritsar carpets come from the city and surrounding area in North West India, close to Kashmir. Amritsar carpet designs are not influenced by Persian design but more so by western and European taste of the last 150 years and therefore totally so different the more southern Indian carpets of Agra.
Amritsar carpets are woven from high quality wool and have a distinctive weave pattern on the reverse side that makes them recognisable to the trained eye, as well as coming with a double cord and cotton foundation.
I do not often count knots per square cm, the majority of Amritsar Carpets are 75000 - 90000 knots to sqm.
This carpet is from 1994 and was part of a specific production made for Fairman Carpets of London between 1992-1996 overseen by the late John Page, Antique and Oriental Carpet specialist & and expert and LAPDA member.
