The Denon PMA-860 is a highly regarded integrated amplifier from the early 1990s (around 1990–1992). It is known for its robust build quality and Denon's Optical Class-A circuitry, which aims to combine the sonic purity of Class-A operation with the efficiency and cool running of Class-AB.
It provides excellent dynamic headroom, making it a fantastic choice for driving demanding speakers and handling complex vinyl pressings or dynamic digital tracks.
Key Features & Internal Design
Optical Class-A Circuitry: Denon utilized an optocoupler to control the bias current. This eliminates switching distortion (a common issue in standard Class-AB designs) without generating the massive amount of heat typical of pure Class-A amplifiers.
Robust Power Supply: It features a heavy power transformer and large smoothing capacitors, ensuring it can deliver plenty of current during sudden dynamic peaks.
Excellent Phono Stage: The built-in phono preamplifier is highly versatile, featuring a front-panel switch to handle both MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges. The 94dB SNR for MM is exceptionally quiet for a vintage integrated amp.
Subsonic Filter & Source Direct:
Source Direct: Bypasses the bass, treble, loudness, and balance controls for the shortest, cleanest signal path possible.
Subsonic Filter: Cuts out low-frequency rumble (below 16 Hz), which is incredibly useful for preventing woofer pumping caused by warped vinyl records.
Sonic Character
Sound-wise, the PMA-860 is typically described as neutral, punchy, and detailed. It doesn't color the sound excessively, offering a tight, well-controlled low end and a clear, spacious soundstage. Because of its high power delivery into 4\Omega, it handles low-impedance or notoriously "difficult" speakers with ease.
