It is a luxury timepiece introduced in the early 2010s (circa 2009–2011) that bridges the gap between a robust diving watch and a refined dress watch. It is part of the second generation of Aqua Terra models, notable for introducing the "Teak Concept" dial and the in-house Co-Axial Calibre 8500.
Historical Context
The Aqua Terra collection was first launched in 2002 as a tribute to Omega’s maritime heritage, specifically influenced by the design elements of the 1960 Automatic Seamaster.
Design Evolution: This specific model (Ref. 231.20.42.21.06.001) belongs to the collection's 2008 revision, which replaced the smooth dials of the original 2002 series with vertical grooves inspired by the wooden decks of luxury sailboats.
Technological Shift: It marked a major transition for Omega as it moved from modified ETA movements to the purpose-built Calibre 8500, which featured a tri-level Co-Axial escapement designed for superior precision and longevity.
Key Specifications and Materials
The 231.20.42.21.06.001 is distinguished by its bi-colour "Two-Tone" construction and specific aesthetic features:
Case and Bracelet: A 41.5mm case crafted from a combination of stainless steel and 18K red gold. The bracelet follows this same dual-tone theme.
Dial: A grey "Teak Concept" dial with a vertical striped pattern, featuring red gold hands and hour markers coated with Super-Lumi Nova for readability.
Movement: Powered by the OMEGA Calibre 8500, a self-winding chronometer movement with a 60-hour power reserve. It includes a "time zone function" allowing the hour hand to be adjusted independently without stopping the watch.
Durability: Water-resistant to 150 meters (500 feet) and protected by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal on both the front and the exhibition case back.
Market Performance and Collectability
While now discontinued, this model remains popular on the secondary market due to its versatility. It ranks in the top 20% of Omega watches by popularity on the secondary market.
